Analysis of a New Edition of the Core Texts

In this blog post we will investigate a new edition of the Longchen Nyingtik Core Texts or Nyingtik Tsapö produced and published by Samye Ngagyur Rikdzö Tsomdrik Khang and Böjong Böyik Penying Petrün Khang (the latter is connected with Alak Zenkar Rinpoche). To our knowledge, this is the first new edition of the core texts since the edition published by Shechen Monastery/Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche in the early 90's.

A ten volume edition of the Core Texts

A ten volume edition of the Core Texts

What is perhaps important to keep in mind is that in the past in Tibet, and also in modern times, any collection of this sort is just a particular set of texts collected at a certain time. Sometimes these collections are made on behest of lineage holders or other teachers, who then might be involved in the reproduction of the collection in varying degrees, from just requesting the collection to be made or financing the production, up to scrupulously spellchecking the whole collection. This kind of work was often seen as upholding and spreading the Dharma. In modern times, there are also publishing houses which act like any other publishing house and are also printing collections in order to make money. Of course one would think that in normal circumstances printing books solely for the benefit of the Dharma is the better choice and would yield a better result. Yet sometimes it is good to also look at the quality of the work that is done; some editions, even if printed for profit, are extremely well done (and, unfortunately, visa versa: some editions made with good intentions are nevertheless a disaster!).

Having said this, for this collection we will look only at its content. It is too soon to judge the quality of the work and only time can tell us. First we will discuss the contents of the complete collection, and then we will proceed, for reasons that will soon become clear, with a detailed outline of the final three books.

Contents

The collection consists of ten books. The first two books comprise of the two most famous commentaries on the Longchen Nyingtik preliminaries by Patrul Rinpoche and Khenpo Ngakchung.

  • 1 Words of my Perfect Teacher (ཀུན་བཟང་བླ་མའི་ཞལ་ལུང་)

  • 2 The Guide to the Words of my Perfect Teacher (ཀུན་བཟང་བླ་མའི་ཞལ་ལུང་གི་ཟིན་བྲིས་)

Volumes 3, 4 and 5 consist mostly of the original treasure revelations that were included in two volumes in the Derge edition of Jigme Lingpa’s collected works and were spread out over 3 volumes in the first 3 volumes of the Core Texts published by Shechen Monastery. Besides one or two minor additions, the texts are exactly the same as in the other editions.

  • 3-5 Mostly the original treasure revelations.

Up to here there is nothing out of the ordinary, which was to be expected, since these concern mostly the revelations by Jigme Lingpa. The next two volumes consist mostly of the additions that were made by Shechen in their edition of the Core Texts (in volumes 4 and 5).

  • 6 and 7 mostly the additions that were found in volumes 4 and 5 of the Shechen edition.

A few minor texts have been added, for reasons not immediately obvious. Texts that have been added are a short fire offering or jinsek by Tamdrin Gonpo, an amrita offering (sman mchod) signed by signed by a Pema Sherab Zangpo (pad+ma shes rab bzang po), and a maṇḍala offering ritual by Longchenpa. Also a treasure of Khyentse Wangpo has been included here belonging to the ‘od gsal rdo rje snying po’ ycle, and for unknown reasons (accidentally?) one of these texts has even been added twice.

And so again, up to now there is not much out of the ordinary. Yet the final three volumes (8, 9 and 10) present us with a large collection of interesting texts and therefor deserve our full attention. Most of these texts were perhaps available in one or two other collections, but several are new to us and do not seem to have been available (at least not on DBRC). Leaving the new texts aside (which are of course most interesting), even to have all these texts published together in one edition is of great benefit already for Longchen Nyingtik practitioners.

Volume 8 consists of several commentaries on the Longchen Nyingtik sadhanas. First there are the commentaries on Rigdzin Düpa by Khenpo Chemchok Döndrup Tsal and Khangsar Tenpe Wangchuk, which have already been translated into English in The Gathering of Vidyadharas. There there is a commentary on Dukngal Rangdrol by Khenpo Pema Vajra and several commentaries on the Yumka Dechen Gyalmo practice by Ratön Ngawang Tendzin Dorje, Dodrupchen Jigme Tenpe Nyima, and Lushul Khenpo Könchok Drönme (all of these are currently being translated by the Longchen Nyingtik Project). The final text in this volume is an annotated commentary on the Spontaneous Vajra Song of Fulfilment and Confession (Kongshak Dorje Tollu) by Muksang Tulku Pema Kunzang Rangdrol.

Volume 9 starts with a few lineage prayers, followed by several texts by Adzom Gyalse Gyurme Dorje, including his commentary for beginners on Yeshe Lama. There is also a short commentary on the Yeshe Lama by someone called Damchö Gyatso, whom we have been unable to identify and whose text we have not been able to find anywhere else. After that we find Patrul Rinpoche’s famous The Special Teaching of the Wise and Glorious King (Tsik Sum Nedek), including his auto-commentary. Then we find many texts related to the Takhyung Barwa practice, the 'Framework for a Great Accomplishment Practice' or drupkok written by Jamgön Kongtrul for general purposes, and Khenpo Chemchok's commentary on Palchen Düpa. The volumes concludes with a bunch of commentaries on the Laud Laughter of the Ḍākinīs (Khandro Gegyang), the Chö ('severance') practice of the Longchen Nyingtik, including one by Patrul Rinpoche and one by Rigdzin Nangdze Dorje, a disciple of Shabkar Tsokdruk Rangdrol (who recieved the Longchen Nyingtik from King Ngakgi Wangpo, who in turn received it from the First Dodrupchen).

Volume 10 starts with several generation phase commentaries important in the Nyingtik tradition and often also very popular in the Nyingma traditions as a whole, such as Shechen Gyaltsab’s Overview of the Generation Phase, Katok Getse’s A Clarification of the Development Stage Rituals, Kunkyen Tenpe Nyima’s General Notes on the Rituals of the Development Stage and Patrul Rinpoche’s Clarifying the Difficult Points in the Development Stage and Meditating on The Four Stakes That Bind the Life-Force. All of these can be found in English translation in the books Deity, Mantra and Wisdom and Vajra Wisdom. Volume 10 ends with 6 texts on the yogic exercises (tsa-lung) of the Longchen Nyingtik by Adzom Gyalse Gyurme Dorje, Minyak Khenpo Mingyur Dorje, Muksang Tulku Pema Kunzang Rangdrol and others.
